Ceremony Marks Mitchell's First Elected Term

LAWRENCEVILLE, Ga., Tuesday, Dec. 31, 2024 — Gwinnett County Tax Commissioner Denise R. Mitchell was sworn into office Monday by Gwinnett County Probate Judge Christopher A. Ballar at the Gwinnett Justice and Administrative Center in Lawrenceville, Georgia. Receiving over 240,000 votes, Mitchell won the position in the Nov. 5 election. She had the highest number of votes cast out of the opposed elected officials in the county. This is her first elected four-year term.
Mitchell has 26 years of experience in the Gwinnett County Tax Commissioner’s Office. She began working in the GCTC as an accounting supervisor, then moved up the ranks to accounting manager and later to the position of director of finance and accounting. In 2021, she was appointed the county’s chief deputy tax commissioner and began serving as tax commissioner in May 2022.
Mitchell earned a bachelor’s degree in hotel and restaurant management from Georgia State University and a master’s degree in public administration from DeVry University’s Keller Graduate School of Management. She continued her professional development, earning Certified Local Government Manager and Certified Finance Officer designations from the University of Georgia.
She serves as an advisory board member for the Georgia Department of Revenue and as vice chair for the Tax Commissioners’ Technology Development Council of Georgia, known as TC Tech.
Approximately 100 individuals attended the ceremony, including county officials and employees, and Mitchell’s family and friends. Mitchell’s daughter, Danyel Mitchell, gave the remarks.

Mitchell, MPA, is a constitutional official responsible to bill, collect and disburse over $2 billion in personal and property taxes and administer homestead exemptions for the nearly one million Gwinnett County residents. Serving also as an agent for the state of Georgia, the tax commissioner registers and titles motor vehicles and disburses associated revenue. As of December 31, 2023, the GCTC has registered the highest number of motor vehicles in the state.
